Hyaluronic
Acid (also called hyaluronan or hyaluronate) is a component of
connective, epithelial, and neural tissues and is present in all of
those cells.* And, while its primary function is to lubricate and
cushion, it is also what gives skin its volume and fullness.* The
average 70 kg (154 lbs) person has roughly 15 grams (3 teaspoons) of
hyaluronic acid in their body in areas such as joints, heart valves,
eyes and skin.*
As
we age, our levels of HA are reduced contributing to the decline in the
structural integrity of the body.* Because HA is a primary component of
synovial fluid, it is important in the lubrication of joints and the
integrity of tissues.* In the joint, HA also acts as a shock absorber
and structural stabilizer.* As our levels of hyaluronic acid decrease,
it may become painful to perform basic ADL's (activities of daily
living) such as climbing stairs, walking, etc.*
